What is a registered patent agent?
A person who has passed the Patent Agent Examination conducted by the Indian Patent Office and is entered on the register of patent agents. Only a registered patent agent (or the applicant) can prepare documents and act before the Patent Office on an applicant's behalf.
How do I check if a patent agent is registered?
Every registered agent has an IN/PA number. You can look it up on the register of patent agents on the IP India website.
Does my patent agent need to be in my city?
No. Patent filing and most hearings are online. What matters is the agent's experience in your technical field. The Patent Office branch that handles your application depends on where you live or do business, not where the agent is.

Ask whether they have drafted patents in your field, who will actually draft the specification, what's included in the fee (search, drafting, filing, examination reply), and how they track deadlines.
